Understanding the e-Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules

  1. Type of Ticket: If you have booked your train ticket at a railway station reservation counter, then such tickets can only be cancelled at railway counter and not on phone or online. Similarly,  if you have booked a ticket online through IRCTC Website, then it is called an e-ticket, and it can only be cancelled online through the same website or by calling the IRCTC customer care number 0755-6610661.
  2. e-Tickets can be cancelled until the chart is prepared by the railway staff. This usually happens during previous night for trains departing till 12 in the noon from the train originating station.
  3. If the chart is already prepared then you or the IRCTC customer service agent will not be able to cancel the ticket. In such cases what you or the IRCTC customer care representative will do is use the online TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) filing. This can be done by logging into your IRCTC account and then select PNR for which TDR is to be filed and click “File TDR” Button.   4. Refund Rules: If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hrs before the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges deducted (per person) are ₹240/- for AC First Class, ₹200/- for AC 2 Tier, ₹180 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair car, ₹120/- for Sleeper Class and ₹60/- for Second Class.
    For tickets cancelled when less than 48 hours are left for departure, a flat 25% of the fare is deducted as cancellation charges.
    Similarly, if time left for departure of train is between 4 hours to 12 hours, then 50% of the fare is deducted.{Rules quoted above are as on July 2019} <<Check latest refund and cancellation rules here>>
