Important Note: Not happy with refund amount your received for your cancelled tickets? Check the latest refund rules on official website of IRCTC Here. Knowing the refund rules often clears the misunderstanding.

Understanding the e-Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules

  1. Type of Ticket: If you have booked your train ticket at a railway station reservation counter, then such tickets can only be cancelled at railway counter and not on phone or online. Similarly,  if you have booked a ticket online through IRCTC Website, then it is called an e-ticket, and it can only be cancelled online through the same website or by calling the IRCTC customer care number 0755-6610661.
  2. e-Tickets can be cancelled until the chart is prepared by the railway staff. This usually happens during previous night for trains departing till 12 in the noon from the train originating station.
  3. If the chart is already prepared then you or the IRCTC customer service agent will not be able to cancel the ticket. In such cases what you or the IRCTC customer care representative will do is use the online TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) filing. This can be done by logging into your IRCTC account and then select PNR for which TDR is to be filed and click “File TDR” Button. The refund process will take at-least 60 days and more.  Click here for more about <<TDR filing rules>>
  4. Refund Rules: If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hrs before the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges deducted (per person) are ₹240/- for AC First Class, ₹200/- for AC 2 Tier, ₹180 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair car, ₹120/- for Sleeper Class and ₹60/- for Second Class.
For tickets cancelled when less than 48 hours are left for departure, a flat 25% of the fare is deducted as cancellation charges.
Similarly, if time left for departure of train is between 4 hours to 12 hours, then 50% of the fare is deducted.{Rules quoted above are as on July 2019} <<Check latest refund and cancellation rules here>>

IRCTC Going Private Soon

Currently, IRCTC is a public sector unit and operates under the Indian Railways, functioning under the direct control of Ministry of Railways, New Delhi. However, it is all set to change very soon.

We can say this because Tejas Express train, which is run by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is called India’s first privately-run train. This is not true, as IRCTC is a subsidiary of Indian Railways. Even if we take into consideration the recent equity sale by Indian Railways in the IPO of IRCTC, still it remains a government controlled company with more than 50% shares.

So, if IRCTC run trains are to be called Private Trains, then we may very soon see a big disinvestment in IRCTC by Indian Railways, making it a truly private company. With Indian government planning to handing over operations of 150 trains and 50 railway stations to private operators, this disinvestment may come very soon.

Check out the share holding pattern and promotor names in the screenshots provided below. These have been taken from and

IRCTC-Shareholding Pattern Jan 2020 IRCTC Promotors

As, you can see currently, the President of India owns much more than 50% of equity in IRCTC, then how can it be a private company and Tejas express a private train. Unless of course, if it is to be privatized soon.

Private IRCTC – Better Services ?

So, what would be the effect of IRCTC going private? This is for everybody to guess. IRCTC is already a great company which is doing very well financially as well as in customer satisfaction.

Ordinary businesses won’t be able to buy a majority stake in IRCTC because it is quoting at a decent price in stock exchanges. So, probably a rich Indian business man like Ambani or Tata would buy a stake or It may also go to a Indian-Foreign partnership firm. One thing is sure that it would be an Investor with big pocket. And we can expect improvement in facilities and IRCTC customer support with IRCTC going private.

Very soon we will see airport like facilities in IRCTC operated railway stations and trains.
